Honi mindfulness

In Hawaiian culture, the act of honi, or greeting with a gentle kiss, serves as a profound expression of respect and aloha, especially towards our kupuna—grandparents and elders. As a member of Generation X, I was raised to honi my elders at every gathering, a practice that instilled a sense of community and connection. However, as I embrace my new role as Tutu, I’ve observed a shift in how younger generations approach this tradition. Some may feel awkward or unsure about greeting kupuna in this way. I respect their feelings, but I also appreciate the warmth that comes from honi. I’m curious to hear how other young kupuna greet their mo’o. Do you carry on the Tutu tradition?

Aloha, Hawaii homeowners with Sunrun or SunPower! Are you keeping an eye on your solar panel production numbers? If you have a leased system, it's essential to verify whether your panels are meeting the production targets outlined in your contract. I've been examining my own system and found it surprisingly difficult to check this information effectively. I’m curious if others have taken the time to investigate their numbers or if they simply rely on the provider's monitoring app. If you're looking for more insights on community happenings, check out our article on "Summer Basketball Camp for Keiki," which offers fun opportunities for the little ones. People & Paws Pharmacy Commercials

In the realm of television commercials, few evoke as much discomfort as the People & Paws Pharmacy advertisements. Many viewers find their self-centered approach cringeworthy, overshadowing the genuine connection that should exist between service providers and their audience. Instead of fostering a sense of community, these commercials often come across as overly self-promotional, detracting from the heartfelt message that could resonate with pet owners. This sentiment has sparked conversations across various forums, highlighting the need for authenticity in advertising. Question from a British haole.

Aloha! Your curiosity about the acceptance of foreigners as ali'i in the Kingdom of Hawaii is intriguing. During Hawaii's period of independence, the ali'i class was primarily composed of native Hawaiians, but there were instances where foreigners were recognized for their contributions and influence. The Kingdom did not have a formal peerage system for non-Hawaiians, but notable foreign individuals could gain prominence and respect within the community. This topic is rich with historical context, and for further exploration, you might enjoy our article, "Native Hawaiian weaver, feather artist, quilters, and an ocean voyaging canoe," which delves into the cultural tapestry of Hawaii. Registration Refund

Has anyone else encountered issues with vehicle registration refunds after moving out of Hawaii? I relocated in December 2025 and, following my shipping company’s advice, renewed my Hawaii vehicle registration to avoid delays during the shipping process. I obtained a new registration valid until November 30, 2026, but my vehicle arrived at its new location in January 2026. I registered it in my new state shortly after. Upon checking the Honolulu county website, I learned that refunds are available if I provide proof of registration in another state. However, I was informed that I am ineligible because I shipped my vehicle after December 1, 2025. This seems unfair, as I renewed my registration only to meet shipping requirements. Hawaii Legislature passes first-in-nation bill targeting Citizens United ruling

In a groundbreaking move, Hawaii lawmakers have passed a pioneering bill aimed at curbing the influence of corporations in state elections, marking a significant challenge to the U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling. By invoking the principles espoused by America’s Founding Fathers and addressing the historical context of the Hawaiian Kingdom's overthrow and the sugar industry's dominance in local politics, the bill seeks to restore the integrity of democratic processes. Lawmakers, inspired by a legal theory from the Center for American Progress, argue that since states have the authority to create and regulate corporations, Hawaii can rightfully deny them the power to spend in elections. This legislation positions Hawaii as a leader in redefining the relationship between corporate power and electoral democracy.

Selling a car with no insurance, registration, or safety check

Selling a car without current insurance, registration, or a safety check can be challenging, but it's not impossible. In your situation, where the vehicle was brought from the mainland and has expired registration and insurance, there are specific steps you can take. First, check with your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for their guidelines on title transfers for unregistered vehicles. You may need to obtain a bill of sale and a statement of facts to clarify the vehicle's condition and history. While you can still sell the car as-is, it’s crucial to be transparent with potential buyers about the vehicle’s status. This approach not only builds trust but also ensures compliance with local regulations.

I can feel myself slipping into an accent when I visit family and I’m worried I sound like a jerk.

When visiting family in Mililani, the subtle shift in your accent can prompt concern about how you're perceived. With deep roots in the area—your grandparents' long-standing presence, your mother's upbringing, and your early childhood memories—you might feel a connection to the local culture. Yet, living on the mainland for over 25 years has shaped your identity, making these moments of accent change feel out of place. It's natural to worry about sounding disrespectful or like a tourist, especially given your appearance and background. However, this accent slip is likely a reflection of your familiarity with the environment rather than an intentional mimicry. Embrace the nuance of your experience; it’s a testament to your connection to your family's heritage rather than a sign of insincerity.

Uber premier driver

Considering a transition to Uber Premier with a Tesla is an exciting prospect, especially after your successful experience with a regular car. Many drivers find that Uber Premier can be busier due to the demand for higher-end rides, providing the potential for increased earnings. However, it's essential to weigh this against the investment in a Tesla. Teslas are known for retaining their resale value, often holding strong in the blue book market compared to traditional vehicles. While you might have concerns about selling it if things don't go as planned, the Tesla brand typically enjoys popularity and demand, which could ease your worries. Ultimately, assessing the local market and demand for Uber Premier rides will help you make an informed decision.
