Small Change is Making a Big Impact for Maui Nonprofits
Our take

The spirit of Maui shines brightly, even amidst ongoing recovery efforts, and the “round up” initiative by Hana Hou Hospitality is a beautiful illustration of that resilience. It’s heartening to see businesses actively seeking ways to support the community, especially given the challenges the island has faced. This simple act, allowing diners to contribute a small amount to vital local nonprofits, exemplifies the power of collective action. It's a tangible way for visitors and residents alike to participate in the island’s continued healing and future prosperity. The program’s focus on cultural preservation, environmental stewardship, and community needs aligns perfectly with the values we hold dear at Hanalei Bay Country Club – a dedication to authentic experiences and responsible engagement with the ‘āina. We’ve seen firsthand the power of community support, as highlighted in [Mele for Maui Is a Community Celebration This Weekend], and this initiative echoes that same sense of shared responsibility and hope. It’s also encouraging to note the county’s progress in recovery, as detailed in [9/14 update from county], demonstrating that even small steps forward contribute to a larger positive trajectory.
What’s particularly compelling about this program is its simplicity and transparency. One hundred percent of the contributions go directly to the selected nonprofit each quarter, eliminating any ambiguity about where the funds are going. This fosters trust and encourages participation. The selection of different organizations each quarter also ensures a broad impact, addressing a range of critical needs within the Maui community. The participating restaurants – Māla Ocean Tavern, Coco Deck Lahaina, Pizza Paradiso, and Pineapple Robot – are all beloved local spots, further reinforcing the program’s authenticity and connection to the island’s vibrant culinary scene. This isn’t about flashy promotions or exclusive offers; it's about genuine care and a commitment to giving back. The consistent passenger counts, as reported in [9/14 Daily Passenger Counts for Kauai], while significantly lower than usual, suggest a steady stream of visitors who are increasingly seeking meaningful ways to engage with the islands.
Beyond the immediate financial benefits to the nonprofits, this initiative cultivates a deeper appreciation for Maui’s unique culture and environment among visitors. It encourages conscious consumption and promotes a sense of responsibility for the island’s well-being. It’s a subtle but powerful way to educate and inspire, aligning with our own values of celebrating nature and culture with a sense of discovery. This kind of grassroots support is often what sustains communities through challenging times, and it’s a testament to the unwavering spirit of the people of Maui. It moves beyond the superficial tourist experience and fosters a connection to the place and its people – a connection that is essential for long-term sustainability.
This “round up” program offers a compelling model for other businesses across Hawaii and beyond. It demonstrates that even small changes can make a big impact, and that businesses have a vital role to play in supporting their communities. It’s a reminder that luxury and authenticity aren’t mutually exclusive; in fact, they often go hand in hand. As Maui continues on its path to recovery, it will be initiatives like this that demonstrate the true strength and resilience of its people and the enduring appeal of its spirit. What other innovative ways will we see businesses integrate support for local communities into their operations, and how can we, as stewards of our own communities, amplify these efforts?

Launched in 2026, the Round-Up Program has already supported three nonprofits across the island. During the first and second quarters of the year, contributions went to the Lahaina Community Land Trust, which helps long-term recovery efforts in the area. The third quarter beneficiary is Kahākūkahi Ocean Academy, which empowers Maui’s youth through ocean education, environmental stewardship, mentorship and cultural connection. During the fourth quarter, contributions will go to the Lahaina Restoration Foundation, which works to preserve Lahaina’s historic landmarks, cultural heritage and sense of place for future generations.

Through Sept. 30, diners can round up their checks to support Kahākūkahi Ocean Academy (K.O.A). All of the contributions will support K.O.A’s mission of empowering the island’s youth through ocean education.
As a local business group, Hana Hou Hospitality says it’s proud to give diners an opportunity to support the community that has stood by it over the years. Each meal becomes a chance to make an impact beyond the restaurant and help preservee what makes Maui a special place.
