QR Asset tagging system for Inventory

I'm currently a new employee at this one company, and my supervisor turned over an inventory management to me. We handle multiple properties and had to account the furniture and fixtures in each one. While this is easier compared to the usual inventory since it focus less on quantity...it still daunting considering that I have to monitor the condition and movement of each one of those assets. Since it could be moved from one property to another without me on the site, I fear that we lose track of the location of some without proper reporting.

In any case, we come up with the idea of using qr tagging system to monitor them more easier. We're looking for a system wherein if someone scan the qr, they can update the location, and status of the item contained in an existing excel file. The issue with this is that even though we've tried, we're not really IT major so we're just trying this and that we saw from the internet.

Can we really implement this kind of system in excel without an app of site providing a backend and front end for this? Please let me know of your thoughts..
